How do I shop for power?

To go shopping, log in to your Powershop account from your desktop or mobile app and select ‘Shop’.

We sell power in different dollar amounts called Powerpacks. This means you can buy as little or as much power as you need.

If you ever forget to shop for power or if you don’t have time, don’t panic. Powershop isn’t a pre-pay service. We won’t cut you off! We’ll simply bill you for the power you’ve used at the end of your billing period (aka your Account Review period).

That being said, if you want to make the best savings with Powershop, regularly buying Powerpacks on special is the way to go!

Can I buy power after I’ve used it?

Yes! You can buy Powerpacks at any time.

If at the end of your Account Review period you’ve used more power than you’ve purchased, we’ll email you to let you know.

You then have a choice. Either:

  • Log in to your account and buy a Powerpack from the Shop – and take advantage of our discounted Powerpacks
  • Log in to your account and purchase the exact amount to cover how much power you’re short – this will be charged at your Standard Rate. Which is still very good!
  • Hold tight and we’ll buy the exact amount to cover how much power you’re short. This will also be charged at your Standard Rate.

What is a Powerpack?

What-is-a-powerpack

A Powerpack is a dollar amount of power. We sell Powerpacks in a range of different dollar values in our online Shop – which you access by logging in to your account from your desktop or mobile app.

Underneath each Powerpack you’ll see:

  • The cost of the pack (the amount you pay) and what it’s worth (based on your Standard Power cost) – making it easy to see what you’re saving
  • How many days of power the pack should give you
  • Around how many dollars per day that works out to be.

Buying Powerpacks allows you to save money on your Standard Power rate and is handy for budgeting and planning ahead. We sell Special Packs, Top Up Packs and Future Packs. Read about each type of Pack.

What are the different types of Powerpack?

Our Powerpacks come in different dollar amounts to suit your pocket and how much power you need at the time.

Our Top Up Packs allow you to buy a specific amount of power (to the nearest whole $) at your Standard Power rate.

Standard-power3

Our Standard Power Top Up pack gives you just that, power priced at your standard rate, but that’s not your only option:

  • With our Power for Good Top Up pack, you make a donation to charity along with your Standard Power purchase.
  • With our AirShed Green Top Up pack, you make a contribution towards offsetting the emissions associated with the amount of Standard Power you purchase.

Our Special Packs give you a discounted rate against your Standard Power rate and come in a range of sizes. We’ll regularly surprise you with extra-special specials to help your savings mount up. These are usually available for a limited time.

Download our mobile app to get notifications when new specials go on the shelf in the shop. You can also keep up to date with specials by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Special-Packs

Simple Saver is our super discounted Powerpack that is available once a month.

Simple-saver

The Simple Saver discount starts off at 20% in your first year then increases by 1% each year you’re with us, reaching a maximum of 25% after five years.

Future Packs allow you to squirrel away power for the months to come. As well as helping you to spread out payments, they also have a little discount to help you save. The further out you buy Future Packs, the bigger the discount!

How do I pay for Powerpacks?

When you confirm that you want to buy your Powerpack in the Shop, the default option will be to complete the transaction using your preferred payment method. You can nominate either a direct debit or credit card as your preferred payment method.

You can override this option and pay using internet banking, if you like. Or if you prefer to pay with cash or by eftpos you can add money to your account at any NZ PostShop using a Powershop recharge card. Read more about Powershop recharge cards.

You can set up and edit your preferred payment method by going to ‘Account Preferences’ in your ‘Settings’ in your desktop account.

Can I turn off the emails that confirm my Powerpack purchases?

Sure. If you’d rather not receive these emails, simply log in to your desktop account. Go to ‘Settings’, then ‘Alerts’, untick the ‘Purchase notification’ option, and the job’s done.

You’ll still be able to keep track of the Powerpacks you’ve bought under the ‘Transactions’ tab in your desktop account and in the ‘Account history’ section of the mobile app (three quarters of the way down the main menu, under ‘Your property’). We will also include a tax invoice for each Powerpack you have purchased in the PDF attached to your Account Review email.

How many/what size Powerpack(s) should I buy?

It really depends what suits you and:

  • how much you have to spend
  • your average usage
  • what’s coming up

When you put a pack in your cart, your Power Organiser will show you how many days it is likely to last.

Power-organiser3

If you budget weekly, you might buy a few smaller packs over the month. If you budget monthly, you may go for one bigger one. If the forecast is for a cold snap or your rellies are coming to stay, you might buy more than usual.

You’ll quickly get a feel for how much power you normally use. Our online tools will also help with that. The key to saving is to grab the extra special discounted Powerpacks as they come up.

I have more than one property – do I have to buy different Powerpacks for each?

No you don’t, if all your properties are on the one account. Powerpacks scale to cover all your properties, so there’s no need to buy the same pack for multiple properties, multiple times. You can just buy one for all each time.

Multi-shop1

If you prefer to keep your properties separate? (For example, if you prefer to buy separate Powerpacks or make separate payments for different properties.) Let us know – call us on 0800 462 668.

What is Simple Saver?

Simple Saver is one of our extra-special Special Packs. It’s available once a month and gives you a super discounted rate off your Standard Power – we’ll show you the percentage discount each time. If you download the mobile app, you’ll receive a notification when Simple Saver is available.

Simple-saver

The Simple Saver discount starts off at 20% in your first year then increases by 1% each year you’re with us, reaching a maximum of 25% after five years.

What are Future Packs?

Future Packs are discounted power you can buy now to use in a later Account Review period.

How do I find them?
Log in to your Powershop account, click the ‘Shop’ tab and you’ll find Future Packs at the bottom of the page.

In the mobile app, swipe left through the circles to a future month. Or go to the menu and tap on ‘Shop’, then scroll down to the Future Packs section at the bottom.

When can I buy them?
You can buy Future Packs from six months to two months in advance, with discounts ranging from 10% to 2% against your standard rate. The earlier you buy, the more you save!

A new Future Pack (for six months ahead) hits the shop at the beginning of each calendar month with the full 10% discount, and you have the whole month to buy it at that discount level.

If you don’t have quite enough in your budget to cover a Future Pack purchase right now, check out our blog post on how to buy now and pay later.

As with all our Powerpacks, you can get a refund within 48 hours of purchase if you change your mind.

When can I use them?
Each Future Pack is available for use from the date of the Account Review prior. For example, if your account review is on the 15th, a June Future Pack will be available for use from 15 May.

Like our other Powerpacks, Future Packs don’t expire – not even when the month ends. If the Future Pack doesn’t get used up before your Account Review period is over, any balance will roll over to a future Account Review period.

Note: Powerpacks are applied to your account in order of discount, packs with the highest discount are used first.

What is Power for Good?

Power for Good is a new type of Powerpack that allows you to make a donation to a good cause while you top up your power.

Here’s how it works. For every $10 you purchase, you get around $8 worth of power at your Standard Power rate, plus a donation amount of around $2 which we pass on to the designated charity at the end of the promotional period. Power for Good will feature a different registered charity every three to four months.

You can find Power for Good in the Top Up section of the Shop in your desktop account, or on our mobile app, swipe through the Powerpacks at the bottom of the Balance screen until you come to Power for Good.

You can use Power for Good to top up with power when you are running short at Account Review time, between power specials, or whenever you like. If the power doesn’t get used in your current Account Review period it will simply roll over until it is used.

If you like, you can set Power for Good as your ‘Default Powerpack’. This means we will automatically purchase this on your behalf if you have an amount owing after your Account Review. Log in to your desktop account, click on the Settings tab then choose ‘Default Powerpack’ on the left-hand menu and follow the instructions from there.

Note: Because the power component of Power for Good is priced at your standard rate, it will be applied to your account after any discounted power you have purchased through our special Powerpacks.

Is GST included in the price?
Yes, GST is included in both the Standard Power and donation amount you purchase. We pay the GST inclusive donation amount to the supported charity.

Can I get a refund if I buy it by mistake?
Yes, as with our other Powerpacks, you have 48 hours to refund the purchase yourself. Log in to your desktop account and click on the ‘Transactions’ tab and click the refund button. You can still get a refund after 48 hours by calling us on 0800 462 668.

Can I claim my donations with Inland Revenue?
Yes, if the donation portion of what you have spent on Power for Good for any single charity adds up to $5 or more, we will email you a donation receipt at the end of the tax year (in April).

What if the Powerpacks I buy don’t cover my usage?

Don’t worry, we won’t cut you off! If you use more power than you’ve bought, we’ll let you know. You can buy more power yourself or let us do it for you. If we buy it for you it will be at your Standard Power rate so you won’t get the savings you can make by buying the special discounted Powerpacks yourself. However your Standard Rate is still very good!

What if I buy too much power?

Leftover power will stay in your account and go towards future months.

How do I get the best savings?

You can save by buying special discounted Powerpacks and Future Packs. These are discounted against your Standard Power rate. You can find the discounted special Powerpacks in the ‘Special Packs’ section of the Shop.

Simple Saver has the biggest discount and is available once a month. The discount increases by 1% each year you’re with us, reaching a maximum of 25% after five years.

We’ll regularly surprise you with extra-special specials. These are usually available for a limited time. So make sure you keep an eye on the Shop by logging in to your account regularly or download the mobile app to get notifications.

You can also keep up with specials by following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Can I get a refund on Powerpacks if I change my mind?

Yes. If you change your mind about buying a Powerpack you have 48 hours to refund the purchase yourself. Log in to your desktop account and click on the ‘Transactions’ tab. You should have a ‘refund’ button next to any transactions for Powerpacks you’ve bought in the last 48 hours. You can still get a refund after 48 hours by calling us on 0800 462 668.

Your refund will be credited to your Powershop account and not your bank account or credit card. We only refund your bank account or credit card in exceptional circumstances or if you close your Powershop account. For further details see our Refunds page.

If we’ve done your Account Review in the time between you buying the Powerpack and asking for a refund, then we may not be able to refund you.
